about the scheme A GOVERNMENT GRANT DESIGNED TO GET OLDER CARS OFF IRISH ROADS
the ICE2EV scrappage scheme is a €10 million Government of Ireland initiative, administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). It was announced by Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien on 3rd June 2026 and forms part of Ireland's wider commitment to accelerate the transition to zero-emission transport.

the scheme works simply: scrap a qualifying older petrol or diesel car, buy a new electric vehicle, and the €8,500 grant is deducted from the price at the point of purchase. Your Renault dealer manages the entire process with SEAI on your behalf — there is no separate application to make.

budget is limited and is split between rural and urban applicants. Once the budget for a category is used, it closes. Registering your interest with your local Renault dealer now is the best way to secure your place in the queue.

COMMON QUESTIONS

SCRAPPAGE SCHEME: QUESTIONS ANSWERED

The most common questions Irish drivers are asking about the ICE2EV scrappage scheme and how it works when buying a new Renault electric vehicle.
APPLICATIONS OPEN EARLY JULY 2026 — BUDGET IS LIMITED
The ICE2EV scrappage scheme has a total budget of €10 million. Once funds are exhausted the scheme closes — there is no waiting list. Budget is split between rural and urban applicants. Registering your interest with your local Renault dealer now costs nothing and puts you in the best position to apply the moment the scheme opens.
WHAT IS IRELAND'S EV SCRAPPAGE SCHEME AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Ireland's ICE2EV scrappage scheme is a €10 million Government of Ireland programme administered by SEAI. Announced in June 2026 by the Minister for Transport, it offers a €8,500 grant to private car owners who permanently scrap a petrol or diesel vehicle registered in 2013 or earlier and purchase a new battery electric vehicle. The grant is deducted by your EV dealer at the point of purchase. Applications open early July 2026.
CAN I CLAIM BOTH THE SCRAPPAGE GRANT AND THE STANDARD SEAI EV GRANT?
Yes. The €8,500 ICE2EV scrappage grant is entirely separate from and additional to the standard SEAI electric vehicle purchase grant, currently up to €3,500 for private buyers. If you are eligible for both, your Renault dealer applies for both simultaneously, meaning the combined saving could reach €12,000 or more off the price of your new EV
WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE DEALER?
You will need your Vehicle Registration Certificate (log book) for the car being scrapped. Your dealer will also verify the vehicle is taxed and insured, and that the NCT has not expired more than 6 months before your application date. Your dealer will guide you through anything else required when you visit.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY OLD CAR — CAN I TRADE IT IN?
No. Under the ICE2EV scrappage scheme terms, your old vehicle must be permanently scrapped by a registered EV dealer — it cannot be traded in, sold privately, or kept. This is a condition of the grant, designed to permanently remove higher emission older vehicles from the Irish fleet
HOW IS THE RURAL AND URBAN BUDGET SPLIT DETERMINED?
65% of the total budget is reserved for rural applicants and 35% for urban applicants. SEAI uses the CSO's Urban City 2025 classification based on your Eircode. If your category's budget is exhausted before you apply, you will not be eligible in that round. Your Renault dealer can confirm your category in advance.
CAN I COMBINE THE SCRAPPAGE GRANT WITH RENAULT PCP FINANCE
Yes, in most cases. The scrappage grant reduces the on-the-road price of the vehicle before any finance agreement is calculated, which can meaningfully lower your monthly repayments on a PCP or HP deal. Speak to your Renault dealer's finance team to understand how the grant interacts with your specific finance product.
